Where I Stand: State Spending Amendment

E-mail Article Print Article

State Spending

I believe that there already exists a mechanism to help protect Nebraska from runaway spending. It's called democracy. I am the only candidate for governor who has explicitly called for specific cuts in the state budget.

State spending is a tough issue because there are so many programs that are great for Nebraska – like education and roads – that are funded on the state level. But the "Stop Over Spending" initiative, Amendment 423, is not a solution. It's an initiative funded by out-of-state special interest groups masquerading as a grassroots quick fix that will actually increase local property taxes. Similar bills have even been suspended in states like Colorado because voters decided it wasn't working for their state. I've been clear about my stance against the SOS initiative since June, and I'm still against the initiative now.
